Reflections on the Law of Rhythm

A few weeks ago I was reflecting on the universal law of Rhythm.

Rhythm is the ebb and flow of life. We see this dynamic play out in our everyday experience but what does it really mean?  I like to think of it as a grandfather clock, where the pendulum swings back and forth. The degree it swings one way, is the force with which it will swing back the other way.

Everything is in constant motion, nothing stays the same. There is no reaching an ultimate goal, for just when you reach the mountain top, it is time to begin to descend.

But do we have to have such wild swings in life, such high high peaks and low low valleys in our life experience?

The short answer is that we do not have to come crashing down and hit rock bottom after reaching the mountain top.  Thankfully, the Law of Rhythm also seeks to maintain balance.  We can swing gently through life, or we can swing wildly, it’s up to us how we choose to experience our reality.

The key to life is that we must keep ascending, keep pushing forward, even when we are down.  And our experience will be much more pleasant the more we express gratitude along the way.

Recognize that there is no ultimate achievement.  They say, “When you hit rock bottom there is nowhere else to go but up.”

This is true.  But it is equally true that if you reach the top, there is nowhere else to go but down.

So do not consider reaching the top as a final achievement. Rather, see it as a new beginning.

Endings turn to beginnings and beginnings turn to endings.

The key is to keep going! There is always more to learn, more vistas to climb, more to experience in this sojourn on earth.

Never say, “I made it!” for that will begin your descent.

Instead say, “I am grateful for this achievement, but there is even more for me to do.”

Never see achievement as the end, or else it will be.

See every accomplishment as something to be grateful for, and use gratitude as an anchor, much like the rock climber anchors his ropes, and with humility, seek to open your mind to ever new possibilities.  This will keep you from swinging back far and will also give you a new point of momentum for going forward.

Onward and upward!

Peace to all.
